Quick answer first. JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is scheduled for 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027, with 31 January held back as a buffer day. Registration is expected to open around the last week of October on jeemain.nta.nic.in, and it usually stays open for about a month. As of today, NTA hasn't published the exact dates, so treat any "last date" you see on a coaching page as a guess.

That's the headline. The rest of this is the stuff nobody puts in the headline.

What to do before JEE Main 2027 registration opens

Here's an honest truth: JEE Main 2027 registration itself takes maybe forty minutes. The preparation takes a weekend. Students who sit down on the first day with everything ready finish in one go. Students who start with nothing end up submitting at 11:40 PM on the last day while the portal crawls.

So get the boring stuff done now. Scan your Class 10 marksheet, since it's used for date of birth. Keep your Class 12 marksheet if you have one, or a school-issued certificate if you're appearing in 2027. Have a government photo ID ready, with Aadhaar, PAN or passport being the usual options. You'll need an active mobile number and email, and here's the part people ignore: use your own, not your father's or your coaching centre's, because OTPs and result messages go there and you can't easily change them later.

Then there's the photograph and signature. NTA specifies file sizes and dimensions in the bulletin, and each year somebody uploads a cropped selfie and gets the form flagged. Wait for the bulletin, read the exact specifications, and take the photo against a plain light background with your full face visible.

Eligibility: the 75% rule people misread

You can apply for JEE Main with no minimum percentage. That's where the confusion starts. To actually be admitted to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions, you need at least 75% in Class 12 (or be in the top 20 percentile of your board). People hear "no minimum" and relax, then discover the rule at counselling time.

Who can apply in this cycle? Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, plus those appearing in 2027. For Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.), Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics need to have been studied. Read the official bulletin for the full list, because NTA tweaks the language almost every year.

One more thing. JEE Advanced, the gateway to the IITs, has its own eligibility rules, including limits on attempts and a Class 12 requirement. Registering for JEE Main doesn't register you for Advanced. That comes later, after Main results, in spring.

While you wait for the form to open, put the weeks to work. SJ JEE is built on the JEE format: an exam mode for timed papers, a practice mode for topic-wise work, topic explanations, a syllabus tracker, study tips, a leaderboard with challenge play, and weak-area detection with a performance prediction. Using the exam mode weekly now means January won't be the first time you sit three hours in a row.

Name, date of birth and category: where forms go wrong

The most common mistakes are boring ones.

Your name must match your documents exactly, down to the spelling of the middle name and the order of initials. If your Class 10 certificate says "Rahul Kumar Sharma" and your Aadhaar says "Rahul K. Sharma", pick the one in your board records and be consistent everywhere. Mismatches don't kill your application, but they create friction at admit card, at the centre and at counselling.

Date of birth comes from the Class 10 certificate. Don't type it from memory.

Category certificates, whether OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS or PwD, need to be valid under the current rules. If you're claiming OBC-NCL or EWS, check the validity period of your certificate in advance, because that's a classic reason for a rejected claim at JoSAA time. If you need a new certificate, applying now is cheaper than panicking in March.

Exam city choices need a moment's thought as well. You usually list a few; the allotment depends on availability. Pick cities you can reach the night before, not the ones that look nice on a map.

After you finish JEE Main 2027 registration: the questions that follow

You press submit, you get a confirmation page, and then your head fills with new questions. Here are the ones that matter.

Should I apply for both sessions? Session 1 is in January and Session 2 is expected in the first week of April, with Session 2 registration likely in early February. Most students take both because your best percentile counts, and a January attempt tells you where you stand while there's still time to fix it. Don't skip January because "I'm not ready". Nobody feels ready.

What if I find a mistake after paying? NTA normally opens a correction window after registration closes, but it doesn't cover everything and sometimes locks specific fields. Treat it as a safety net, not a plan.

Can I fill both B.E./B.Tech. and B.Arch. papers? Yes, in the same form, though each paper may carry an additional fee. The fee isn't announced for 2027 yet; ignore any number you see now.

When do admit cards arrive? City intimation slips tend to turn up roughly a week or so before the exam and the admit card a few days before, but the exact timing will be notified. Keep checking your registered email.

What should I save after submitting? The confirmation page PDF, your application number, the payment receipt and a screenshot of the final preview. Keep them in one email folder. If something goes wrong with the fee, or the admit card shows a different spelling, these four items are what the helpline will ask for first, and portals can be slow to resend them.

Will the test be computer-based? JEE Main has been a computer-based test for years, so the mock-test interface you're used to is the right one to practise on.

What if I miss January? Session 2 exists for that reason, and NTA considers the better of the two scores. That doesn't mean skipping the first one, as above.

A sensible plan for the 12 weeks to January 22

Count back from the exam. Twelve weeks sounds like plenty. It isn't once you take boards, school tests and festivals into account. A workable split is four weeks of finishing chapters that are still untouched, six weeks of mixed practice with a full-length mock every weekend, and two weeks of revision and error-log review with nothing new.

Don't forget Mathematics speed work either: JEE Main is a time-pressure test more than a knowledge test, and the students who drop marks usually know the method but run out of minutes.

Mock discipline matters more than most people think. Sit the paper at the actual exam hours, with no phone, and write down three things afterwards: where you lost time, which silly mistakes cost you, and which topic you'd still skip if you could. That list is your revision plan.

Class 12 students also need to plan around board practicals. CBSE practical exams for regular schools are expected to start around the first week of January, so the weeks right before JEE Main may be crowded. Look at your school's schedule now.

A last practical note on scams

Whenever a big registration season comes around, fake websites pop up. The official portal is jeemain.nta.nic.in, with notices also on nta.ac.in. Anyone who offers to "guarantee a centre" or "fix your form for a fee" is not NTA. The registration fee is paid on the official portal and nowhere else.
