Where October 24 Sits in the Test Calendar
The ACT test calendar for fall 2026 has three dates: September 13, October 24, and December 12. Of these, October 24 occupies a middle position. September 13 is the last comfortable ACT date for November 1 Early Decision applicants. October 24 scores arrive in late November — too late for November 1 deadlines but fine for January Regular Decision applications. December 12 scores arrive in late December, which is workable for January 15 deadlines but cutting it close for January 1.
For seniors who tested in September and are considering a retake, October 24 is the natural second attempt. For seniors who have not yet tested on either test and are targeting Regular Decision schools only, October 24 is a solid option with more preparation time than September.
Registration and Logistics
Test date: Saturday, October 24, 2026
Regular registration deadline: Approximately September 18, 2026. ACT registration deadlines are typically about five weeks before the test date — verify the confirmed deadline at act.org.
Late registration deadline: Approximately October 2, 2026. A late fee applies (currently $36 USD).
Score release: ACT typically releases scores approximately two to eight weeks after the test date, depending on the testing scenario. Multiple-choice scores are often available within two to three weeks of test day for computer-based testing. For October 24, expect scores in mid-to-late November 2026.
Standby testing: ACT allows standby registration on test day if seats remain available. Standby applicants must arrive at the test center with a completed registration, the standby fee, and required identification. Standby is not guaranteed. Do not rely on standby as a primary plan.
Score Timing for Different Deadline Types
November 1 and November 15 EA/ED deadlines: October 24 ACT scores almost certainly arrive too late to submit before these deadlines. If you need a score for November 1 applications, September 13 is the last viable ACT date.
January 1 RD deadlines: October 24 scores arrive approximately late November — six to eight weeks before January 1. Ample time for official score sends and self-reporting.
January 15 RD deadlines: Even more comfortable. Seven to nine weeks between October score release and January 15 deadline.
Superscoring on the ACT
ACT introduced official superscoring in 2020, allowing students to combine their best section scores across multiple test dates for a reported composite. Not all colleges accept the ACT superscore — check each school's policy on their admissions page.
If a school accepts ACT superscoring, the strategy for the October 24 date depends on your September 13 result. If September produced a stronger English or Reading score and you expect October to produce a stronger Math or Science score (or vice versa), the superscore from both dates could produce a meaningfully higher composite at schools that superscore. This makes October testing relatively low risk when a prior score is already in place at a superscoring school.
Effective Use of the Six Weeks Between September 13 and October 24
If you took the September ACT and are retaking in October, six weeks is a meaningful preparation window — long enough for targeted improvement on specific sections, short enough that you need to be focused rather than scattered.
What works in this window:
Review your September score report in detail. ACT provides a breakdown by subject and question type. Identify the two to three question types within each section where you lost the most points — these are your highest-leverage practice targets.
Practice the specific question types you identified, using official ACT materials. Do not take additional full practice tests until you have done two weeks of targeted question-type drilling. Practice tests before drilling specific weaknesses just repeat the same errors.
Take one full timed practice test in week four. Review the results against your drilling work.
In the final two weeks: light maintenance. One more practice session on your two weakest areas. Focus on pacing and test-day management rather than new content acquisition.
Who Should Prioritize the October 24 ACT
Students who took the September ACT and need improvement for RD schools: The six-week retake window with targeted preparation is viable for meaningful score improvement.
Students who have not yet tested and are only applying RD: October 24 gives you more preparation time than September 13 with the same score availability before January deadlines.
Students whose October SAT score will not arrive in time for a retake before January: For students who tested SAT in October (October 3) and find their score insufficient, October 24 ACT is a parallel opportunity with an independent score that arrives on approximately the same timeline.
Students whose school profile is stronger for ACT than SAT: If your diagnostic testing suggested ACT is your better format (typically: you work quickly under tighter timing, you do well in science data interpretation, you are strong in English grammar and mechanics), prioritizing ACT dates over SAT dates is correct.
The December ACT: Your Last Option
December 12, 2026 is the final ACT date of 2026. Scores from the December ACT arrive approximately in late December or early January 2027. For January 1 deadlines, this is very tight — potentially arriving too late depending on exact score release timing. For January 15 deadlines, December scores are workable.
Register for December now if there is any chance you want that option. ACT registration for December closes in early to mid-November. Missing the registration deadline eliminates the option.
