Clearing Changed Your University — Now What?
UCAS Clearing resolved your university place. You are going somewhere you may not have originally planned. Before you do anything else — before accommodation, before enrolment, before anything — update your Student Finance England application.
This is not optional paperwork. It is the mechanism by which your tuition fee loan reaches your actual university rather than the one you originally applied to finance. If Student Finance England has the wrong institution in your record, they send your tuition fee payment to the wrong university. That creates a problem that can take weeks to untangle and can delay your course registration.
What Needs Updating
When you changed universities through Clearing, two things potentially changed that affect your student finance:
Your institution and course: The university and course code on your UCAS application changed. Student Finance needs to reflect this change so the tuition fee loan goes to the right institution.
Your living arrangement (possibly): If you originally planned to live at home and your Clearing university requires or makes it more practical to live away from home, your maintenance loan calculation needs updating — students living away from home outside London receive a significantly higher maintenance loan than students living at home (£10,544 vs £8,877 maximum for 2026–27). If your living situation changed, do not leave this uncorrected.
How to Update Your Details: Step by Step
Step 1: Log into your Student Finance England account. Go to gov.uk/student-finance and sign in with your Government Gateway credentials. If you cannot remember your Government Gateway details, use the recovery option on the GOV.UK login page — do not create a new account.
Step 2: Go to your 2026–27 application. Inside your account, select the current academic year's application (2026–27). You should see your application status and a section for changing details.
Step 3: Select "Change your university or course." There is a specific function for this. Enter your new university name and select it from the dropdown. Enter your new course code — this is the UCAS course code for the specific course you accepted through Clearing. If you do not have the course code, your Clearing offer letter or the university's admissions confirmation will include it.
Step 4: Update living arrangements if these changed. If your accommodation situation is different from what you originally declared — living away from home when you previously declared living at home, or vice versa — update this in the relevant section of your application. This affects your maintenance loan entitlement.
Step 5: Submit the update. Confirm the changes and submit. You will receive a confirmation email to your registered address. Keep this.
Step 6: Allow processing time. Student Finance England is extremely busy in the weeks after A-Level results day. In normal circumstances, changes process in four to six weeks. In August and early September following results day, this can extend to eight to ten weeks due to volume. This means if you changed university through Clearing in mid-August, your updated loan may not fully process until October. See below for what to do about this.
What If Processing Delays Your Funding?
If your tuition fee loan update is still processing when your course starts in September, your university typically knows this is happening — they deal with this situation every year. Contact your university's student finance office (not Student Finance England) to let them know you changed through Clearing and have submitted an update. Universities generally allow students to register and attend while loan processing is pending.
Your maintenance loan may also be slightly delayed if your update is still processing when the first instalment would normally be paid. Universities often have emergency short-term loans or hardship funds specifically for students in this situation. Ask your student finance or welfare office as soon as you arrive.
If Your New Course Has Different Fees
Most full-time undergraduate courses at UK universities charge the standard £9,790 fee for 2026–27. Some courses — particularly sandwich courses with a work placement year, accelerated degrees, or courses with a different structure — may have different fee levels. Your tuition fee loan is calculated based on the actual fee of your course.
If your Clearing course has a different fee than your original course, Student Finance recalculates your tuition fee loan when you update your course details. You do not need to do anything additional — the system adjusts automatically once you enter the new course code.
Independent Students and Non-Standard Situations
If you are a mature student, care leaver, estranged student, or otherwise applying as an independent student, the update process is the same. Log in, update the institution and course, and submit. If your independent student status means your maintenance loan was calculated without parental income, this calculation remains the same — the course change does not affect your independent student classification.
Care leavers may also be entitled to additional support through their local authority, independent of Student Finance England. Check with your leaving care team if your university changed through Clearing — some bursaries are institution-specific and may need to be renegotiated with your new university.
Checking Your Update Was Processed
After submitting your change, check your Student Finance account regularly. A processed update typically shows:
- Your new university name appears in your "Current application" section
- Your tuition fee loan amount reflects the fee of the new course
- If maintenance changed, the new maintenance loan amount appears
If four to six weeks pass and the update still shows as "pending" or your original university still appears, contact Student Finance England by phone at 0300 100 0607. Have your customer reference number ready (shown in your Student Finance account).
One Thing Many Students Miss
Student Finance England needs your bank details to pay your maintenance loan. These were entered when you first applied. If your bank account has changed since you originally applied — which may be the case if you opened a student bank account specifically for university — update your bank details in the payment section of your Student Finance account at the same time as you update your university.
Your tuition fee loan never comes to you — it goes directly from Student Finance to your university. Only the maintenance loan is paid to your bank. Incorrect bank details mean your maintenance loan is sent to an account you cannot access.
