Scotland Gets Results One Week Earlier
A-Level results day for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland falls on 13 August 2026. Scottish SQA results — National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher — arrive on Tuesday 5 August 2026, one week earlier. Scottish students using UCAS to apply to universities in Scotland and across the UK can access their UCAS application status from the same morning their SQA results arrive.
This guide is specifically for Scottish students receiving SQA results in August 2026 and navigating the UCAS process from that date.
How to Access Your SQA Results on 5 August
MySQA account: If you registered with MySQA before the exam diet, your results are available through your MySQA account from 8am on 5 August. MySQA also sends results by text and email to the contact details you registered. If you have not registered for MySQA, your results are sent to your school and your school will provide them to you — check with your school's timetable for how and when.
MySQA login: mysqa.org.uk — your username is your SQA candidate number and your password is what you set at registration. If you cannot remember your login details, the MySQA site has a recovery process, but do not leave this until the morning of 5 August. Reset credentials in advance.
School results days: Many Scottish schools also have in-person results days on 5 August where you can collect printed results and speak to pastoral staff. Your school will have communicated whether this is happening and what time.
What Your UCAS Hub Shows on 5 August
Scottish applicants who applied through UCAS for 2026 entry will see their application status update on the UCAS Hub from 8am on 5 August. This is one week ahead of the England results day UCAS status updates.
The UCAS status meanings are identical to those for English applicants:
Unconditional Firm (UF): Your first-choice university has confirmed your place. You are enrolled.
Insurance Confirmed (IC): Your firm choice was not confirmed (you did not meet the grade conditions) but your insurance choice confirmed you. You are going to your insurance university.
Conditional Firm (CF) or no update yet: Your firm-choice university is still assessing your results against your conditions. Check back within a few hours or contact the university's admissions office directly.
In Clearing: Your firm and insurance choices were not confirmed. Your Clearing number appears in the Hub from 8am.
Scottish Highers and UCAS Tariff Points
Scottish qualifications translate to UCAS tariff points, which many universities — including English universities — use alongside grade conditions when assessing applications. The UCAS tariff for Scottish qualifications:
Advanced Higher:
- A: 56 points
- B: 48 points
- C: 40 points
Higher:
- A: 33 points
- B: 27 points
- C: 21 points
- D: 15 points
National 5:
- A: 24 points
- B: 16 points
- C: 8 points
Note that National 5 qualifications are rarely required for UCAS tariff calculations for university entry — Higher and Advanced Higher grades are the primary reference points.
Many Scottish students sit Highers in fifth year (S5) and Advanced Highers in sixth year (S6). Conditional offers from universities may be expressed in Advanced Higher terms, Higher terms, or a combination. If your conditional offer is expressed as "Advanced Higher conditions" and you have not yet sat Advanced Highers, this is a significant factor in how you assess your offer strength.
Clearing for Scottish Students
UCAS Clearing works identically for Scottish students as for English, Welsh, or Northern Irish applicants. If you are in Clearing on 5 August:
- Your Clearing number appears in your UCAS Hub from 8am.
- Search for courses with Clearing vacancies at ucas.com/clearing from 8am.
- Call university Clearing hotlines for courses you are interested in — have your Clearing number, UCAS Personal ID, and SQA grades ready.
- Collect verbal offers from universities you call.
- From 1pm on 5 August, add your chosen Clearing choice to UCAS Hub.
Scottish students in Clearing have the same access to all UK university Clearing vacancies as any other applicant. Scottish universities — the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of St Andrews, University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, University of Stirling, Heriot-Watt, Robert Gordon University, and others — typically have Clearing vacancies alongside English and Welsh universities.
Scottish Students Applying to Scottish Universities: SAAS and Fees
Scottish students attending Scottish universities have a different fee arrangement than students in England. Scottish students at Scottish universities pay no tuition fees — fees are covered by the Scottish Government through the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). This is a distinct arrangement from the English student loan system.
If you are a Scottish student applying to a Scottish university and you have not yet applied for SAAS funding, do so immediately. SAAS funding applications for 2026–27 entry were ideally submitted in spring 2026, but late applications are processed — apply as soon as possible.
If you are a Scottish student attending an English university, you are subject to English tuition fees (£9,790 for 2026–27) and apply for Student Finance England, not SAAS. This catches some Scottish students off guard — the fee-free arrangement is for Scottish students at Scottish universities only.
Appeals and Requests to Review Marking
The SQA appeals process for 2026 allows students and their schools to request a review of marking if a grade appears significantly incorrect. The priority process for results affecting university entry:
- The school (not the student directly) requests a priority review within a specific window after results day.
- Priority appeals for Higher and Advanced Higher results affecting university entry are processed before the main UCAS Clearing and offer confirmation deadline.
- Check with your school's SQA coordinator for the specific appeal request deadline, which is typically within the first week after results day.
About one in five or six SQA marking reviews in recent years have resulted in a grade change. This is not high probability, but if a teacher genuinely believes a grade was awarded incorrectly — particularly if it differs from mock performance and continuous assessment — a priority review is worth pursuing.
UCAS Adjustment: Available for Scottish Applicants Too
If you exceeded your firm offer's conditions with your SQA results, Adjustment allows you to apply to a higher-tariff course or university without losing your confirmed place. The Adjustment window runs from 8am on 5 August until 11:59pm on 12 August — five days for Scottish applicants (compared to seven days for English A-Level applicants who results day on August 13).
Use the Adjustment window if you significantly exceeded your conditions and believe you could access a more competitive course or institution. Contact universities directly about Adjustment places, using the UCAS Adjustment function in your Hub. If no Adjustment offer materialises within the window, you retain your original confirmed place.
